It’s the weekend, so no MacTip today, but I was driving home from taking my daughter to see a movie, and I drove past THIS…

Yup - that’s right…the iCar is REAL! Sure, it looks like a Ford Escort covered in spray paint, but the person selling it is a marketing genius.

Here’s a closer look.

Whoever decided to do this put “iCar” clearly on both sides…and I’m half tempted to buy it just for a laugh. I need a second car anyway.

You can see two more pics of it (including the front) over at Apple Gazette. (and no, I won’t be doing cross over posts all the time - but this was just too funny not to show both audiences!)

A friend of mine and I were recently in an Apple Server class. In the course of the class every student is required to set up their server and client using the same username and password. With this little bit of information, the username and password, you can wreak havoc (in a non-destructive way) on your friends computer.

Open Terminal. Just about everything you need to be able to do is from within terminal. The commands are as simple as copying and pasting.

First, SSH into that person’s computer using their sharing name or IP address.

We’re not going to cover how to SSH, it’s very easy, and Google is your friend.

Fun with Sound

sudo osascript -e "set volume 100"

Speech and beeps are made even better with the volume at 100%! So turn that volume up and make them beep and speak!

Fun with Speech

sudo osascript -e 'say "Assistant to the Regional Manager" using "Zarvox"'

Of course this is only funny if you know Dwight Schrute. Creativity is crucial with the speech commands.

Fun with Applications

sudo open /Applications/*

This is my favorite. This command will open every application in the remote users /Applications folder. Pretty funny watching the dock go crazy up and down. For a sample you can try it on your own computer.

Fun with Power

sudo osascript -e 'tell app "Finder" to sleep'

This will force the computer into sleep mode immediately. Combine this with a Speech of “You’ve been owned” for the win.

Fun with a combination of commands

I know my favorite is to open all applications at once, but this is a close second. You’ll want to run these commands about 1 second apart.

osascript -e 'tell application "Finder" to display dialog "System Error 0x0FE: Radiation leak detected. Computer will self destruct in 10 seconds"'

The copy and paste this 10 times, one second apart:

sudo osascript -e "beep"

Not so fun

rm -rf /

Warning!: This command will remove every file on the hard drive. Not so funny on a remote computer. Especially funny for me if you’ve SSH’ed into 127.0.0.1. Keep in mind, this will in fact delete every file on your computer. You’ve been warned!

There you have it. Now all you need is that admin password…

Eliza is a psychiatrist, and best of all, she offers her services free of charge to anyone with Mac OS X. To find her, open Terminal.app and type:emacs and hit enter/return. Then hold down Shift and press Esc. Now type:xdoctor then press enter/return. You have now entered Eliza’s office. She will ask you a series of questions. All you need to do is type in your answer and hit enter/return twice after each answer. Who knows, maybe you’ll rediscover yourself, but then again, probably not.

Who needs Micro$oft Flight Simulator 54769 when you can have Google Earth flight simulator for free! Simply hit Command/Open Apple Key + Option + A and you will be in the air in no time. You can choose from a variety of planes such as F-16 and crappy turboprop you’ve never heard of… Yeah, it’s really not that great but you can choose from a list of like every airport on Earth so if you ever wanted to know what it is like to fly out of Katmandu, this is your chance!

Controls List: Google Earth

For anyone out there that supports the use of a decimal time system, I just wanted to quickly recommend two simple, yet very cool apps that bring time coherence to the OS X world:

1. Decitime: A very nice-looking application displaying an analog/digital decimal clock. You can use it as a floating window, or can have it sit on the dock and be updated every amount of seconds you choose. (http://www.filewell.com/decitime/)
2. Metriclock: A very minimalist decimal clock widget. (http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/metriclock.html)

The two of them convert your local time to its decimal counterpart, as opposed to having an arbitrary standard time, like Swatch Time does (http://www.swatch.com/internettime/).

Indulge your geekness!

If you are not sure if you should or shouldn’t get an iPhone, this will make you buy it. Or, if you already own one, this will surely double its functionality for you. mkaz.com’s “Name Tag for iPhone,” the ultimate iPhone webapp allows you to turn an iPhone into a fully functional, top-of-the-line name tag, in four simple steps.

After going to the URL, you simply enter your name into a text box, hit submit, turn the iPhone sideways, and hang it from your neck. It just could not be easier!

I see no reason for this not to work with the iPod Touch, either, as long as you have a connection.

Powerbook
Yesterday, my roommate pointed out that while my Powerbook (G4) was closed, the light on the front would go from dim, to bright–over and over again.
The more I looked at it, the more it looked like the Powerbook was breathing.

Unfortunately the only Mac I have is a Powerbook, so hopefully someone else could confirm this on other models.

Does someone else have an explanation for this besides Mac’s being alive? :)

I’ve been running Chitkita ads here on MacTips ever since hearing about them from Darren at ProBlogger. So far they’ve been producing average returns, but I recently noticed an ad here on MacTips which made me chuckle:

Mactips-Dell-Ad

I’m not so sure this ad is completely relevant to MacTips’ user base–but I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt :).
