MacTips - What’s on Your Desktop?

I thought it would be interesting to see everyone else’s desktops.

To take a screenshot of your desktop, press Command+Shift+3.

This saves an image of your active screen straight to your desktop. The filename generally starts with “Picture”.

To upload your screenshot, head on over to http://www.mactips.org/uploader.php.

Copy/Paste the code from the text box into the comment field.

Rob, It's called EarthDesk - http://www.xericdesign.com/earthdesk.php

It's an awesome program, does updates every X minutes and is extremely customizable.

The only problem is it costs $23. There is OSXPlanet (http://www.osxplanet.com/) which is free, but doesn't support Leopard.

I'm looking for other solutions, but I haven't found any yet. May 7th, 2008 at 10:34 pm

Quite embarassing..... Can' t upload the file. It says only .png/.jpeg/.gif images are allowed. It's really a .png file..... Changing to .jpg or trying to upload with firefox doesn't help a bit.

My desktop at work is almost always grey or a pattern I make grey so it doesn't interfere with they way my eyeballs see color. Exciting, I know. This one is a William Morris Thistle pattern I found on the Adobe Exchange.

have you tried Command+Shift+4? your mouse turns into a crosshair thingy and you can select the area to take the screenshot. to use it keep the left mouse button pressed while choosing the area and let it go to take the screenshot. if ur choosing the area, therefor, having the left mouse button pressed, clicking the right mouse button will cancel it.

i wrote this since it didn't came along with the mail u sent us, and since i use it alot, other ppl should find this pretty handy ^^ May 8th, 2008 at 4:00 pm

On my MBP:

I use the circles to organize stuff. The HD icon is a croc from Pearls Before Swine (comic strip). In the lower left hand corner is an applescript that I drop files onto to archive them into a separate Gmail account.

If I'm trying to memorize something, I'll put the text of that something into the center circle. Then, I'll see it whenever I look at my desktop.

Finally, the HD icon isn't actually the HD, but an alias to the HD with the name being " ". That way it doesn't show any text. Also, the icon is a 1% opaque square so that I can easily drop stuff onto my HD, but still have a nice big icon for it. :D (You can see the arrow for the alias to the left of the red line.

BTW, I made it all in Keynote.

Well, that's all I have to say about it.

MacTipper, I really like that idea--have you written a tip on this?

LifeIsAGas, Go to http://www.mactips.org/uploader.php and upload the screenshot of your desktop (Command+Shift+4).

Then you'll see a screen with some code on it inside a textbox (like the comment box here).

Copy and paste that code into the comments box.

Also, the uploader will accept desktop backgrounds, so if you'd like to share your image simply upload it and paste the link. May 8th, 2008 at 5:11 pm

I captured this image from a HD copy of the commercial and expanded it to fill the screen. To the left of this monitor is my PC monitor, which has PC looking back and Mac. Their gazes work perfectly with the differing heights of the monitors as well.
