How to NetRestore Remotely

Apple Remote Desktop LogoI recently discussed the benefits of using NetRestore to manage multiple computers. Now you can continue managing those computers without ever touching each machine!

After you have NetRestore completely set up and working, all you have to do is open Apple Remote Desktop choose the computer from your list that you want to NetRestore and click Manage > Set Startup Disk.

When that window opens, click Custom Volume. Put in the IP address of your local server that handles the NetRestore process and then in the Network Volume field you’ll put the name of the NetRestore (.nbi) file located on the server in Library > NetBoot > NetBootSP0. Leave off the .nbi. Your screen should look like this:

Once you’ve done that, click Restart When Done then click Set.

If NetRestore is set up properly, the target computer will restart, find the NetRestore server, pull over your default configuration and either wait for you or if you have it set to fully automate, it will NetRestore and restart automatically!
