How to Make Firefox 3’s Buttons Look Good

The latest Firefox Beta, version 5 came out this past week and I was hoping that they would have made the change to the to the buttons they’ve been talking about. But they didn’t and the huge, ugly Back button still sticks out like wart on Margaret Hamilton. Thankfully though the fix is fairly simple and it does the job.

Here’s how to make it go from this:

before to this:
after

  1. Open up Firefox
  2. Go to View –> Toolbars –> Customize…
  3. Make sure “Use Small Icons” is checked

small icons

It isn’t great, but in my opinion it’s at least better and gets a little closer in terms of aesthetics to the best browser in the world, Safari.

The grApple theme works even better: http://www.takebacktheweb.org/

  2. Meh, I've used the Grapple theme and either it wouldn't keep up with the development of Firefox (although it is now), or I would come across a place where Grapple would have no idea how to render something.

Why not just change the "Show:" radio button to Icons and Text? Serves the same purpose without shrinking your icons if you are on a smaller screen or like the larger icons.

  4. Icons and Text is nasty :)

This is quite handy to know, but I have actually got used to the MEGA button :) Besides, I've already customised some of my icons so they are the same size so don't want to redo them =)

    Thanks for the tip =)

  6. I love the big back button, I think it's very useful to be bigger, because it's one of the most frequently used buttons.
