TabletDraw: A Cool Application for Tablet Users

I recently picked up a drawing tablet (impulse buy), but I find that many of the drawing programs that are currently available are not specifically meant to be used with tablets. The brushes don’t behave like real brushes and the speed of the pen has no impact on the thickness of the resulting line. It is just like using a mouse shaped like a pen, in fact, that’s exactly what it is.

Then I came across this neat application called TabletDraw. It’s an application designed to emulate the feel of a pen on paper. It’s a simple program with not a lot of functionality (as you can see in the picture below) but it does what it’s designed to do, and that is to feel like a real pen. This is accomplished by making it so that the speed of the brush has an impact on how thick the line is. It is currently in Beta, but I believe the developer plans on releasing it as Shareware in the future so act soon if you wish to try it for free.

I don't have a tablet, but I used this with my touchpad to draw a network while taking notes in class today, and I really like it. Far easier and more natural than the drawing built into Microsoft Word 2004. I only wish it could save as something other than a .jpg image. That way I wouldn't need the extra step of converting it to something else to insert it into a LaTeX document as a figure. Thanks for the tip, Michael!
