Extract Icons using Preview.app

While writing the ScreenFlow review I needed the ScreenFlow icon to include in the post. Unfortunately Google didn’t seem to understand what ScreenFlow Icon was. So I was left trying to extract the icon from the Application.

Turns out this is extremely easy. Open Finder, and Copy (Command+C) the file/application/folder you’d like to extract an icon from.

Open Preview (Applications -> Preview.app) and click File -> New From Clipboard (or Command+N).

This gives you a couple different sizes of the icon. Shown below is Preview.app’s icon:

Now, to extract the icon click File -> Save As. Choose the format you’d like to save as (probably JPEG or PNG) and click Save.

It’s as easy as that!

It also works if you highlight the icon in the Get Info window and copy that rather than the application file itself.

  2. Discerptor, That was actually the method I found first, but it required an extra step. I thought this was was a lot easier and cooler :).
