If you’ve ever forgotten your calculator and need to some complex calculations the normal Calculator.app on
OSX isn’t really what you’re looking for. Of course it does have a bit more power than usual if you do
Command-2 to bring up the Scientific options or Command-3 for the Programmer options, however you can get a
lot more and who knows if it’s even accurate.
Thankfully we have a few options, one of the best is Magic
Number Machine. It’s free, full-featured, well graphically laid out, and highly precise.
Other features include:
- 25 accurate digits of precision
- Complex numbers
- Hexdecimal, octal, binary, decimal and 2’s complement display.
- Floating point numbers, even in non-decimal radices.
- A full expression history (go back to anything)
- A graphical display that you can click on to change the entry point
- Value memory limited only by computer memory.
- Statistics functions
- Linear regression
- Matrix functions including gaussian elimination, inversion and determinants.
- Large number of scientific constants built-in.

It’s for the nerds, so if you’re only adding up how many calories you’ve ate today you don’t need it (I hope.)
