Apparently there have been some people who aren’t getting the toggle to have have the translucent menu bar or not when they update to 10.5.2. For those people all you need to do is run this command:
sudo defaults write /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.WindowServer 'EnvironmentVariables' -dict 'CI_NO_BACKGROUND_IMAGE' 0
then restart and the option should appear.

I never had a translucent menu bar. I'm on a pb12". Anyone else with the same problem? This tip didn't fix it.

That is partly true. It is probably true that my machine is being "prevented" from displaying that option because it is a little older. However, when I ran the Beta of Leopard, I had the translucent menu bar and all was well. It is obviously theoretically possible... February 13th, 2008 at 9:13 pm

I did some research for you and here is what I found.
Did you try rebooting after running the command above?
Also, for some reason changing the wallpaper seemed to make a difference for some users, perhaps give that a try.
Have you rebooted since the update? This shouldn't make a difference but some users said this fixed the option.
Have you done the graphics update?
In your System Profiler under Graphics/Displays you should see Core Image: Hardware Acceleration.
That being said the general consensus is this may be a bug as many other users are seeing the same problems.
