Audacity: Great Open Source Sound Editor (FREE)

Audacity is a well known, simple, open source Sound Editor available on multiple platforms. However on the Mac it is a little bit tricky to install for the unintelligible, but it is quite simple.

  1. Download it (I recommend the Beta)
  2. Open it up and drag it to your /Applications folder

Of course it is installed right now, but to do anything with mp3s you’re going to need LAME (mp3 encoder), and we’re going to use MacPorts:

  1. Run: sudo port install lame
  2. Now Audacity has little trouble finding the library files so you need to run: sudo ln -s /opt/local/lib/libmp3lame.dylib /usr/lib/libmp3lame.dylib

And that’s it, now you open, edit and export into mp3s.

  1. Totally LOVE Audacity. It blows GarageBand away! Especially the Mac Beta version. Have been using Audacity for over 2 years now for producing podcasts for our church and for editing our service recordings down for band members to listen to their songs. Have even used Audacity to make my own mp3 ring tones. Big fan of the program - thanks for posting about it.

  2. Great use of MacPorts. It always frustrated me Audacity didn't come bundled with LAME.

  3. mine could always edit mp3's I don't remember installing LAME

  4. Michael, I believe you can edit an MP3 without LAME, but to save (or export) as an MP3 you need the LAME library.

  5. Nope, I've done both. Maybe I'm just special :D

  6. great simple program, you can use this to remove vocals from songs! really great for a free program.
