Say you want to move massive amounts of data in between 2 or more computers; a simple way to do this is to hold “T” while booting your mac. This will abort the normal startup screen and replace it with a giant FireWire logo. Once in this state, your $2000 computer becomes a $100 external hard drive that is connectable to any other Mac, via FireWire. To transfer files, simply connect it to a computer and treat it like a regular external hard drive. Do NOT forget to safely dismount the drive before unplugging the computer or else you could be faced with data loss or worse.
If you are doing this while on the road and wish to conserve your battery, turn off your screen’s backlight before restarting and going into Target Disk Mode.
