Time Consuming Applications Space

There are many people out there who do not appreciate Spaces and what it does; I, however, use it a lot and I find it to be extremely useful.

For those of you who do not know what Spaces is, it is a productivity application that creates separate work spaces for your customization. You can lock certain apps to open automatically in a preset space by going to System Preferences->Exposé and Spaces->Spaces (below pic), then add the apps you want in a certain space to the list. You can also change how you access Spaces through Active Corners, hot keys (default: ctrl + arrow key), menu bar, or any combination of the 3.

This post is about moving all your long-running apps into the same space so that they run in the background while you do the rest of your work/play. Just add all the applications that take a long time to lock in a single space. This means things like DVD rippers, Bit Torrent clients (and other long term downloads), TV Shows/Ted, Video Converters, System Update, etc. It makes it a lot easier to manage and check remaining time your apps’ processes if they are all in the same space.

If you have any other suggestions for themed spaces, send them in to User Submitted tips or leave them in the comments

Spaces is a disgusting hack of virtual desktops and breaks the paradigm in every way. Leopard and Spaces ruins alt-tab window switching functionality, no longer bringing up the most-recently used window of a given application. Windows/Applications on other spaces are listed when trying to alt-tab, where that list should be restricted to windows of applications open on the current space.

Apple only had to copy virtual desktops from X11/X.org, but instead they "improved" it to the point of complete uselessness.
