Mail.app Rules

One great productive feature of Apple’s Mail.app are Rules. With Rules you easily automate designating specific mail into separate folders, delete spam or someone you’re ignoring and so forth. To make a Rule do the following:

  1. Open Mail.app
  2. Open up the Preferences (⌘,)
  3. Click on the Rules tab
  4. Click on Add Rule
  5. Set the conditions you want to make

One example for implementing a Rule in Mail.app is for Facebook users. I myself don’t like having all those Facebook emails mixing in with mail from my friends and family so I created a rule to put all mail from Facebook in it’s own folder. This is how:

  1. Create a “Facebook” folder
  2. Do the steps for creating a Rule shown above
  3. Set the conditions so they are exactly the same as the ones in the screen grab below

Mail.app Rule for Facebook

Not only can Mail.app’s Rules be used for Facebook they can also be used to separate email from family, work, friends and so on. Enjoy!
