A problem both in Tiger and Leopard is that if you have too many folders occupying the right end of the Dock, things get confusing, since most folders just have the default stack or folder view. Also, Apple made the terrible decision of making each stack adapt its icon to the first file or folder in the folder the stack refers to. This causes a problem with folders like Applications and user folders, since they adopt images you probably do not want there. I decided to go about fixing this.
First of all, choose the image that you want to appear for the given stack. Drag that image into the stack or the folder the stack refers to. Rename the image in a way that makes it appear first when alphabetized. (The best way to do this is add spaces to the beginning.) Now, the Stack should take that image for its own icon.
Technically, you do not have to use an image file. You could just set another folder or application that has just the default icon or a specific icon that you want and follow the same process.
I’m not sure if this works in Tiger or not, but I think it should work as well, applying to any folders on the right-hand side of the Dock.

If you would like to actually change the icon, I recommend taking a look at Panic's CandyBar (http://www.panic.com/candybar/). January 2nd, 2008 at 4:36 pm
