Hide Your Private Files with Hide Folders

Hide Folders by Altomac is a great application for hiding folders or files from prying eyes. It is a very simple drag-and-drop application that works like a second desktop that you can hide. Basically, you can drag any folder or file onto the window, and Hide Folders creates an alias to it within its secondary desktop. Then, you can select “Hide” from within Hide Folders and the original disappears from Finder until you select “Show,” at which point it returns to its original place. You can also password protect your files, but that requires the $14.95 Pro version.

  1. You can actually do this with Terminal.

    mv ~/Desktop/Secret\ File.pdf ~/Desktop/.Secret\ File.pdf

This will add a period onto the beginning of the file, making it a system file, which will make it vanish.

  2. True, but Hide Folders provides a nice GUI for this and makes it easier to make items reappear.
