The Menu Bar is a very useful tool for running small applications and processes, and for quick references like what time it is, changing the volume or WiFi and Bluetooth settings. If you use a utility like iStat menus, you may have up to a dozen or more items running in the menu bar, and commenter phil recently pointed out how to rearrange these items to create the most productive setup. It is done by simply holding Command and dragging-and-dropping each item to wherever you want it on the right side of the menu bar. To remove an item from the menu bar, you can simply drag it off the Menu Bar like you would do for an item in the Dock or in the Finder sidebar. This doesn’t seem to work for Spotlight, and some application items like Quicksilver, Adium and Mac Face, but works fine for almost everything else.

Unfortunately, this feature does not work for most application-based menu bar icons. Those are always aligned to the left, and are organized by the order in which they are launched. January 13th, 2008 at 11:32 pm
