OS X has a cool feature known as Smart Folders, which work similarly to Smart Playlists in iTunes. These folders work both as part of the OS in Finder, and in some other applications such as Apple Mail. Macworld shows how to use these folders to create an easy way to access recently used documents and applications, among other things.
