Have you ever lost all your iTunes music files after an iTunes crash, but had them stored on your iPod? Or have you ever just wanted a convenient way to transfer your files to a new computer? Apple is not exactly excited to include a feature allowing you to transfer files from an iPod to a computer, since it would obviously discourage people from shopping on the iTunes Music Store, but there are other solutions….
Meet iRepo X, the simple way to recover songs and playlists from any iPod. It allows you to easily transfer any song from your iPod to your computer, and even makes it easy to only copy specific genres, artists, or albums with its iTunes-like interface. There is an unlicensed version that works for 15 days, and the full version is available for a reduced price of only $12 at the moment ($16.99 list price), from Purple Ghost Software. There is also a Windows version available.
Additionally, commenter “Mike” pointed out that there is another great application which is actually Freeware, known as iSync Tunes. This application actually does a couple things that iRepo does not, including the ability to share music with other computers. It is also available on Windows, and really feels like a Windows application, which frustrates me a little. While iRepo X has more of an Apple feel, iSync Tunes is more of a Windows port.
However, both applications seem to get the job done, so it is really just a matter of your budget and preference.
