OmniOutliner–Get It, Use It, Love It

Omnioutliner-Econ-Notes
OmniOutliner is the fantastic outlining program from The Omni Group. The Omni Group is a software development company that consistently produces high quality applications such as OmniWeb and OmniGraffle.

I use OmniOutliner on a daily basis for a variety of things including planning/brainstorming projects, todo lists, taking notes in class and keeping track of goals/deadlines.

In short, if you don’t have OmniOutliner, get it.

Be sure to check out OmniOutliner Extras for useful scripts, example documents and plugins.

  1. I've used Omni Outliner since it was in beta and I stopped upgrading just before the last one. I think they've blown what was a clean, simple program into a mess. It has never been a great outliner like Acta, More, or InControl (IMHO) and it's had persistent bugs in the core app that have not been cleaned up.

Yes, outliners are great and I've been using them for as long as they've been around (I used betas of Dave Winer's early experiments) and I was a rabbid InControl user but the InControl folks blew it by making their product too complex and they went under.

I still use Omni Outliner (v 2.2.6) but I also use xPad which isn't an outliner but allows simple categorization of notes.

Simple is best and as these products mature they ought not have features added just for the sake of a long feature list if those features make the underlying product less useful and elegant.

  2. Hey Richard,

That's fair enough. Every program won't be suitable for all users--but from my experience, OmniOutliner is great for a variety of uses.

I'll check out some of your other suggestions in your comment.

    Thanks,
    Brad

I'm especially interested in findnig a good outliner that will operate on my work computer (PC) and sync with my iphone, either through the web or direct sync. I want to do most of my work on the computer, but some on the iphone. Any suggestions?
