Quickly Access System Preferences

A quick way to access various system preferences (sound, display, keyboard) is to hold the option key while pressing one of the function keys. This will bring up the system preferences dialog for the selected function key.

For example, holding option while pressing the “Volume Up” function key will launch the System Preferences for sound.

I brought this up in the comments discussion on 'open application in finder' not extremely useful unless you add Command+L directly afterwards (you can even do this before the window has loaded)
