MacTips Crashes IE–My Marketing Plan!

Oh no! My ploy is out. You see, my plan was to create a great Mac site for Mac users all over the world. A place where beginner, intermediate and advanced users can come together and share their knowledge. Oh, and make the site crash for Windows users.

I’ve been getting reports from various places saying the site crashes IE on Windows.

I really wish I could say that the site crashing was part of my marketing plan to start WW3 between Mac and PC users, unfortunately the truth isn’t as glamorous as it may seem.

The truth is I have no idea why it crashes for some people. I booted up the old PC yesterday and it seemed to work fine. So, if I could ask for a little more information on what’s happening when it crashes, hopefully I can fix this problem.

Update: It looks like the problem was with the DOCTYPE, the problem has been fixed. Thanks everyone who offered feedback.

I've been accessing the site on a Windows machine with no problems, but then I'm using Firefox as the browser. My experience with IE is that it needs no help from your site to crash unexpectedly.

  2. Since those using IE won't be able to read your request for information, I opened the site in IE. It crashes immediately, without even loading the site (a trick I haven't seen previously - if you figure it out, you might want to consider marketing it). Here's the error data:

    AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: mshtml.dll
    ModVer: 6.0.2900.2668 Offset: 0021727c

I don't expect this will help much. You'll likely need to do some testing to pinpoint the problem, or "feature" depending on your perspective.

I've noticed the crashes on IE. I'm running xp/sp2 with all patches and my version of IE is 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519

I saved your page locally, took out the DOCTYPE tag at the top, and the page now doesn't crash IE.

So, I'm guessing that IE is having a rough time handling the invalid XHTML on the home page here. Check out the w3c's validation engine to see what's wrong. http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mactips.org%2F

I'd bet that if you get the XHTML to validate, your IE problem will go away.

BTW, great site - I expect to be a frequest visitor as I get to know my PowerBook. :)
    Cheers!

  4. Hey guys,

    Thanks for all the feedback.

I've removed the DOCTYPE tag from the page, can someone confirm that this fixed the problem?

And I definitely plan on getting the site validated and up-to-par with the latest standards.

    Thanks for the help guys,
    Brad
